Situated on a plateau above two ancient, wooded valleys with far-reaching views to the coast. Monterosola has its own complex microclimate which provides our vines with the optimum growing conditions. Here, a regular breeze promotes the natural health and energy of the vines, which, in turn, produce the very best grapes.

With 25 hectares of vineyards producing both white and red wines, the estate also has olive groves, woodlands, gardens, lakes and pastures.

The Monterosola team

A family-owned business, Monterosola represents a new-breed of fresh-thinking winemakers where the quality of the wines is considered long before the vine is even planted in the ground. Our winemaking philosophy is to gently support and promote the health of the land and the life of the vines, securing the success of future harvests.

Our skilled team of winemakers are led by agronomist and winemaker Michele Senesi. His passion for the region and his drive for making world-class wines is evident in all areas of Monterosola. In addition to Michele’s commitment and vision, our wines also benefit from the innovative work of viticulturist Stefano Dini.

At Monterosola our wine production methods are supervised by world-renowned oenologist Alberto Antonini who has previously worked with some of Italy’s most prestigious cantinas including Antinori and Frescobaldi.

A destination winery

The estate has been producing excellent wines since 2003 yet it entered an exciting era in 2013 when the land was purchased by the Thomaeus family who recognised the true potential of the terroir. In 2015 the family embarked on an impressive project, to design and build a grand-scale cantina with purpose-built facilities for wine tastings and events.

The construction was completed in the spring of 2019 when Monterosola opened its cellars doors to visitors from around the world.

Monterosola is now one of the most impressive landmarks on the wine-trails of Tuscany, a 5-storey property featuring an imposing watchtower, private roof terrace, elegant courtyards, alfresco lounge areas and landscaped gardens. Within this architecturally impressive building, guests can discover impressive cellars, a VIP meeting room, oak-panelled tasting room, several event spaces and Monterosola’s wine shop.

An entrepreneurial family

Monterosola is owned and run by the Thomaeus family from Sweden who purchased the estate in 2013. Since taking over the vineyard, the family have lovingly transformed the estate into one of Tuscany’s most inspiring and attractive destination wineries.

The Thomaeus family have a longstanding and a deep-rooted passion for Italy and, for Italian wines. For many years the family have enjoyed holidays in Italy which led to their shared interest in Italian culture, cuisine and winemaking. During their travels they visited many regions of Italy but always had a special fondness for Tuscany and its wines, with Brunello di Montalcino being a particular favourite.

"When we came to Monterosola it was a beautiful spring day and we immediately fell in love. Everything was in excellent order, with talented and knowledgeable employees and the wines were of the very highest quality. Here we saw the huge potential to do something great." Explains Åsa.

With an entrepreneurial spirit running through the family, each of Bengt and Ewa’s three children work in the family business group, Exoro Capital in Stockholm. In addition to their experience in international business & finance, they are all trained sommeliers, an essential attribute to their dynamic winemaking industry.
